Introduction - Traditional CylindersUNION offer a variety of traditional cylinders to meet the demands of every application. Cylinders are available infour different variations. For a full explanation of terminology, please refer to the glossary on page 0.10 in theIntroduction at the front of the catalogue.

How does a traditional cylinder work?A traditional cylinder operates on a row of lateral pins as shown in the diagram below. When the right key is insertedinto the keyway, it will lift all the pins to the correct height so that the plug can rotate and the lock can be opened.

• UNION traditional cylinders operate on a row of five or six lateral pins.

• UNION traditional cylinders are supplied 5 pin as standard, or six pin on complex masterkeyed systems, security cylinders and special orders.

• A standard UNION 5 pin cylinder has over 4,500 key combinations which is ideal for most domestic and commercial applications. When a higher level of security is required, a six pin cylinder, which has over 40,000 key combinations should be specified.

Key Control SystemsUNION cylinders can be supplied individually keyed, keyed alike, key to pass, constructionkeyed or masterkeyed. For further information on key control systems, please refer topages 0.8 and 0.9

FinishesUNION traditional cylinders are available in the following finishes: Satin Chrome (SC),Polished Chrome (CH), Polished Brass (PL), Satin Brass (SB) and Antique Brass (AB).

Selecting the correct cylinder lengthSpecifying the correct cylinder length is important not only for aesthetic appearance, but also security. It isessential to ensure that the cylinder is as flush with the surrounding hardware as possible to reduce theopportunity for the cylinder to be removed. A flush fitted cylinder will also reduce movement over time andincrease the longevity of the product.

When choosing a cylinder length there are three factors to consider:1. Door thickness2. Hardware thickness (e.g. cylinder roses)3. Lock position

In most applications, the mortice lock will be fitted on the door centreline. Therefore, a standard equallength cylinder can be used. However, if the lock fitted off centre then an offset cylinder needs to be specified.

New Cylinder FunctionsWhat is a Construction Key Cylinder?A construction key cylinder is typically used on building sites, where employees need access to the building duringconstruction, but should not have access when the home owner has moved in. The first operation of the homeowner’s key will permanently disable the builder’s key.

What is a Clutch Release Cylinder?A clutch release thumb-turn cylinder is designed to prevent somebody on the inside of the door from holding theturn and locking key holders out. Insertion of the key disengages the clutch, which allows the turn to rotate freelywithout engaging the cam.

What is Classroom Functionality?The classroom function in a thumb-turn cylinder makes it possible to rotate the thumb-turn in one direction only i.e.clockwise only or anti-clockwise only. This is usually used to ensure that someone inside a room cannot lockanybody out but can always escape in an emergency. The cylinder is also clutch release as standard so somebodyin the room cannot prevent a key holder from entering.

UNION Architectural Hardware launches a brand new range of cylinder thumb turns. In addition to the new turns,the UNION cylinder range will now include construction keying, clutch release and classroom functionality.

More aesthetically pleasing and easier to use, the new designs bring a fresh modern look to the trusted andestablished UNION cylinder range.

Operation:• Key operated from both sides to lock or unlock

Features:• 26E18 is a security cylinder tested to EN1303:2005. It can also

be used in conjunction with mortice lock cases L2144E or L2244E to achieve BS 3621:2004

Keying:

• Extensive differs, available both 5 or 6 pin• May be supplied to differ, keyed alike or keyed to pass• May be supplied master keyed• Construction keying, clutch release and classroom

functionality available• Can be keyed with other cylinder products such as padlocks,

outside locking devices and cabinet locks, which use the same key section
