meet RobertAfter working for over 42 years, Robert and his wife are both retired. He drove trucks across the central Virginia region and she worked in housekeeping. As retirees, their fixed income doesn’t cover all their expenses.

Weekly distributions at the Monacan Indian Nation Food Bank guarantee that Robert and his wife will not go without food. The food bank works with Feeding America network member Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to serve the Monacan Indian Nation and surrounding communities. Their monthly outreach is now 10 times more than it was pre-pandemic. In the U.S., approximately 1 in 5 Native American individuals faces food insecurity—nearly three times the rate for white, non-Hispanic individuals.

The food bank is committed to meeting neighbors in the community, like Robert, where they are. That means delivering groceries if someone is ill or lacks transportation, weekly calls to families to confirm appointments and dinners for seniors, among other outreach.

“They’re really helping people,” Robert said.

People facing hunger are at the center of all we do.

meet ChristinaPre-pandemic, the Feeding America network gratefully welcomed nearly 2 million volunteers each month.

However, between May 2020 and March 2021, an average of approximately 55% of food banks were accepting and in need of volunteer support. Members continue to be challenged with the higher demands of keeping staff and volunteers safe while addressing health concerns and adhering to related protocols.

To help fill the volunteer gap, people in communities across the country continued to step up to help their neighbors facing hunger. People like Christina, a chef who knows the power of food.

“Food is one of the basics. I want to make sure people are fed, especially right now,” she said.

When she learned St. James Food Pantry, a partner of the Greater Chicago Food Depository that serves a predominately Asian-American community, was seeking a Chinese translator, she jumped at the opportunity to use her knowledge of multiple Chinese dialects. She began volunteering once a week at the pantry and assisting with monthly mobile food distribution.

“Most people don’t think Asians are lacking, but so many are working in restaurants and a lot are out of work because many of those businesses closed down,” she said. “You can see in the expressions of the people that come to the pantry when I talk to them, ‘Oh, you understand me! You can get me what I need,’ and that’s a good feeling.”

With the pandemic,

I wanted to find a way to help out

if I could.

a message from our CEO and board chairAs our world and our work continue to evolve, we recognize the journey the nation has endured—an ebb and flow of heartbreak and heroics. Still, compassion and optimism abound due to the collective impact that partners like you make possible for neighbors facing food insecurity.

Fueled by your generosity, the Feeding America food bank network helped provide a record 6.6 billion meals to people facing hunger— a 26.6% increase in fiscal year 2021 over the previous year. You helped food banks adapt to this new level of need—with members serving over 55% more people than before COVID-19—so they could safely and efficiently deliver food to families coping with the pandemic’s economic fallout. Across the network, processes were reinvented, including no- or low-contact operations, touchless drive-thru distributions, pre-sorted food boxes and home delivery, to meet the surge in demand.

That type of transformative change is thanks in part to supporters like you, unified in under-standing that we are neighbors helping neighbors, that we belong to one another, regardless of race, gender or geography. It’s trusting that when you invest in the Feeding America network, you’re investing in programs that support and center neighbors facing food insecurity.

To achieve our mission and to advance change in America, Feeding America is accelerating its work to address disparities and advance solutions. Member food banks continue to pivot and innovate, focusing efforts on providing nourishing food to families in communities where it is needed most. We are committed to ensuring every person facing hunger in the U.S. has an equitable opportunity to achieve food security, and we are deepening existing partnerships and creating new ones at the community level that focus inordinately on people who are most impacted by hunger.

Together, we’ve accomplished tremendous achievements amid extraordinary circumstances. We know we can do even more—and with you as our partner, we will. Thank you for your steadfast support of our mission to end hunger and your empathy for neighbors in need of hunger relief.

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

In fiscal year 2021, for the first time ever, we secured more than 2 billion pounds of food through retail donations—a key food-sourcing channel. Doing so reflects the network’s resiliency, strong infrastructure and high degree of coordination. We received capacity grants to enable more retail food recovery optimization by network members—increasing the nutritional yields of the food donated and enhancing the network’s operational efficiency.

We conducted several analyses to help reframe strategies, which include securing more in-kind retail/manufacturing/processor donations through capacity building and piloting opportunities. Our work with manufacturers was a continued focus, including securing food trapped in the supply chain to distribute through the network. This was demonstrated through the growth of the Grocery Purchasing Program, which enabled low cost and increased access to a critical stream of food.

Supported by a dedicated Feeding America team focused on our produce, protein and dairy channels, the network procured 3.8 billion pounds of agri-products—a 21.2% record increase. This includes 2.2 billion pounds of produce, 867 million pounds of protein, and 694 million pounds of fresh milk and dairy products.

We provided $19.6 million in strategic supply chain grants to our regional cooperatives and partner state associations which increased their ability to distribute more fresh agri-products. Some of these grants include the fresh-to-go produce boxes, regional sourcing of frozen protein and fresh dairy products, and a freight offset to ensure broader food access for people facing hunger.

In alignment with both Feeding America and the dairy community’s commitments to equity, resources were distributed to communities of color and member food banks with higher rates of food insecurity in their service areas. Our Dairy Nourishes America partners, including the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, MilkPEP, and National Dairy Council, convened partners throughout the supply chain on behalf of the Feeding America food bank network.

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

The economic fallout from COVID-19 has only exacerbated racial disparities in hunger. We established a set of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) commitments to help increase equitable food access for the most vulnerable populations, with a focus on communities of color and rural communities. We’ve been able to make progress against our commitments, including:

CommitmentIncrease our investment in communities of color, who we know are disproportionately affected by poverty and hunger.

In March 2021, we established a Food Security Equity Impact Fund, designed to drive investments to communities of color known to be disproportionately impacted by food insecurity and COVID-19. The fund is seeded with a $20 million donation made by MacKenzie Scott to Feeding America in December 2020, reflecting her intention to invest deeply into local communities, addressing the root causes of social injustice.

In May 2021, Feeding America released the racial disparity dashboard, Identifying Racism in the Drivers of Food Insecurity. The dashboard is designed to support Feeding America, the food bank network and the public in understanding disparities in the following drivers of food insecurity by race or ethnicity: disability, homeownership, median income, poverty and unemployment.

CommitmentListen to and amplify underrepresented voices in advocacy for government policies that can make a positive impact on the lives of people facing hunger.

We co-created advocacy training with network food banks and input from the people we serve in making their voices heard with lawmakers. We also invested in voter engagement work to support the people we serve in making their voices heard at the ballot box.

CommitmentExpand our efforts to bring members of under- represented communities together and provide a platform to co-create solutions.

We launched community-based initiatives designed to measurably improve food security. We did this in partnership with five member food banks and with input from people with the lived experience of hunger.

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

We supported food banks in identifying the communities they serve where food insecurity rates are highest, including rural geographies and communities of color, and worked closely with food banks to reach people facing unique food insecurity challenges, including families with children and seniors.

To better reach families with children, we provided summer feeding grants for food banks serving areas with a child food insecurity rate above the network median and provided a separate grant for food banks to engage closely with community-level organizations to better meet the need at a local level. We also convened a Child and Family Hunger Design Lab with diverse stakeholders to start thinking about new and better ways to reach families with children through the Feeding America network.

To fight senior hunger, we continue to refine the learnings from community engagement and research projects to build additional network capacity to provide healthy food where seniors need it most, and provide critical funding to food banks sustaining COVID-19 response programs.

We also piloted a place-based approach at five food banks serving rural counties in the Delta region of the southern U.S. to improve population-level outcomes in food security, economic mobility and health. The network’s rural mobile pantry efforts strive to identify partnerships and models that can meet the needs of more remote locations in the South. In all of our work, we provided an unprecedented number of learning and training opportunities to help the network identify and address racial disparities and systemic barriers to food justice.

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

doing more to advocate for hunger relief Feeding America is a trusted voice on the issue of hunger and our credibility helps to influence legislators on both sides of the aisle.

Together, with hunger-relief advocates like you and network members, we help elevate the public sector role to encourage federal investment in nutrition programs that will drive meaningful policy change for millions of people in the U.S. who face hunger.

In fiscal year 2021, more than 500 members of Congress took at least one action on behalf of Feeding America’s policy priorities to strengthen and protect federal nutrition programs, and our digital advocates took 169,411 actions to help ensure families could have food on the table.

At the federal level, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a $1 billion investment in hunger relief—the investment will provide $500 million in additional The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) food purchases, $100 million in grants to support food bank capacity, and $400 million in local and regional purchases through state agencies. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 extended Pandemic EBT funding to provide school meals to children out of school and provided a temporary increase in the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit, which has reduced child food insecurity. Under the modernization to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) announced by the USDA in August 2021, benefit levels increased for the 42 million people who receive SNAP benefits;

the average monthly benefit increased by $36 per person beginning October 2021. We believe that continued improvement to SNAP is critical to achieving food security for people in the U.S.

Also, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 provided a temporary increase in individual monthly SNAP benefits by 15% (through September 2021) and provided $400 million in additional funds for TEFAP.

doing more to improve economic mobility pathways Without the response from federal and state governments, more people would have faced additional hardship in the past year.

Among the one in eight people who receive SNAP benefits, two-thirds are children, seniors and people living with disabilities. SNAP benefits are the most efficient and effective way the federal government can respond to the food insecurity crisis; for every one meal provided by the Feeding America food bank network, SNAP provides nine. We continue to grow outreach through Feeding America’s SNAP Application Assistance Program. This program provides Feeding America resources and capacity-building support to food banks so they can help families sign up for SNAP benefits, enabling 226 million federally funded meals for neighbors in need. In fiscal year 2021, the Feeding America network helped people submit 309,962 SNAP applications—a 4.5% increase over the previous year. SNAP applications submitted through our online paid search program, Google SNAP, saw a 41% increase, and SNAP referrals made from this program saw a 48% increase.

In our fight against hunger, we are partnering with food banks to expand approaches that support neighbors’ financial well-being. There are 80 food banks engaged in Feeding America’s Ending Hunger Community of Practice, focused on identifying and replicating solutions that increase the financial well-being of families facing hunger, and they are working locally to test ideas and replicate what works. Last year, we launched Workforce Development Partnerships and the Economic Shock Pilots, which bundles food, public benefits and financial coaching. In addition, food banks are prioritizing equity, diversity, inclusion and community engagement in these efforts and have formed working groups to elevate and expand promising practices. 9 1

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

doing more to understand hunger through research Throughout 2020, the emerging hunger crisis was an enduring headline and the focus of many studies and storylines.

Since the pandemic began, Feeding America has been a leader in providing rigorous, timely data, using the methodology from our annual Map the Meal Gap (MMG) study to estimate the projected impact of the pandemic on national and local food insecurity in 2020 and 2021. Our most recent projections were generated with a baseline of 2019 historical estimates, which we released in May 2021 to improve our understanding of historical variations prior to COVID-19 and better assess the current and future state of local food insecurity.

During the past year, more than 20,000 news stories referenced our food insecurity estimates from media outlets including CNN, The Washington Post, USA Today, National Geographic, among others. The American Association for Public Opinion Research awarded Feeding America its 2021 Policy Impact Award for MMG and our analysis of the projected impact of COVID-19 on food insecurity across the country.

While one person facing hunger is one too many, based on data released by the USDA, we now know that fewer people experienced food insecurity in 2020 than most expected. The reason that food insecurity levels were not higher is likely due to the response by the public and private sectors to the crisis. To help convey the contributions of the charitable food sector in mitigating higher food insecurity levels, Feeding America estimates at least 60 million people—1 in 5—turned to food banks, food pantries and other private food assistance programs in 2020 in the midst of the health and economic crisis caused by the pandemic. That means the total number of people seeking charitable food assistance increased by 50% from 2019.

The Charitable Food Assistance Participation estimate is based on findings from the Urban Institute’s Well-Being and Basic Needs Survey and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, which were made possible by a years-long effort by Feeding America to develop and test survey questions about charitable food assistance participation, and advocate for their inclusion on nationally representative surveys.

doing more to innovate food rescue & distributionMealConnect, our enhanced free food-donation app that is available nationwide for all food businesses, processed 1.4 million donations and enabled nearly 800 million pounds of food to be rescued.

Since its inception in 2014, MealConnect has helped us rescue more than 3 billion pounds of food. In fiscal year 2022, we launched MealConnect Produce, a new produce-sourcing feature set, allowing us to sunset Produce Matchmaker. This innovative technology with mobile capabilities provides network members a more streamlined experience.

To help eliminate barriers to accessing food, OrderAhead—our first online grocery ordering system—allows neighbors facing hunger to order food from a network food bank or partner organization, and select a pick-up time and location at convenient community locations like schools, drive-thru distributions and libraries. We initiated a pilot of the program in October 2020 and by the end of fiscal year 2021, 11 food banks and 18 distribution sites had provided food to over 4,000 households, reaching nearly 15,000 people. Altogether, over 219,000 pounds of food have been distributed through more than 9,000 orders. During fiscal year 2022, we will expand the program to an additional 20 food banks.

The pandemic exacerbated the need for timely data across all areas of our work, particularly data and insights about the people we serve. The Feeding America network recognized the need for a self-serve platform for neighbors to engage with their local food banks and partner agencies. As part of our Service Insights—a network-wide initiative to glean deeper insights about the people we serve—a new, no-cost platform will be available to all network members in 2022. This came about in a unique collaboration with a network member: The Mid-Ohio Food Collective agreed to transfer its FreshTrak platform and team to Feeding America. We are leveraging our resources, experience and team to build the next generation platform that will enable us to support a broad array of programs and services offered by network members and partner agencies. This technology option will be offered at no-cost to the network.

doing more to meet the sustained need In partnership with supporters like you, we are strengthening the capabilities and capacities of network food banks to serve more neighbors facing hunger.

To accelerate community impact and advance equity, our Strategic Capacity Development team extended the Deep Targeted Services program to seven food banks. Deep Targeted Services advances Feeding America’s strategic priority to equitably meet the need by proactively identifying disproportionately affected populations through data and then building capacity of the food banks that serve them. We then engage the food banks that serve these key populations in a series of three intensive capacity-building services at no cost to the food banks. Teams collaborate across Feeding America in a highly matrixed approach to deliver customized support in fundraising, food sourcing and other strategic areas.

In one case, Deep Targeted Services led to the hiring of a Development Director and the first dedicated food sourcing professional in the history of the food bank. For another, the combination of recommendations and funding allowed the food bank to double its impact via mobile pantries, expanding their product distribution and reaching more of their rural neighbors.

Further, the heavily matrixed nature of Deep Targeted Services catalyzed a swift transition from a Feeding America consultant identifying the need for enhanced efficiency in agency ordering to Feeding America’s Technology team implementing an Agency Express solution, which will allow for real-time viewing of available inventory and online ordering by partner agencies at no cost. In fiscal year 2022, we aim to identify a next set of food banks to prioritize while also building an enhanced core team to guide food banks through Deep Targeted Services.

doing more to advance nutrition and health The work of the Feeding America network extends beyond providing food to neighbors in need.

We develop and implement innovative programs that boost people’s access to nutritious foods and improve the well-being of households across the country.

During the past year, meaningful progress was possible due to increased support from healthcare partners and the formation of the Public Health Task Force, a cross-cutting effort to address workplace health and safety, mental health and well-being, and the food and nutrition needs of the most vulnerable neighbors during a public health crisis. We tested an innovative home-delivery program in partnership with healthcare providers and welcomed a new public health partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity.

In April 2021, our Health & Nutrition team began implementing the Nutrition in Food Banking Toolkit, training 32 member food banks in the adoption of new nutrition guidelines, applying an intercultural competence lens when sourcing and distributing food, and increasing engagement with communities to better meet food needs and preferences. We successfully scaled our Food Is Medicine pilot, nearly doubling the size to 14 food bank-healthcare partnerships, and launched Health Equity in Food Banking, a six-month training on the intersection of hunger, health and equity. CVS HealthAt the start of the pandemic, when many people were seeking charitable food assistance for the first time, CVS Health and their customers stepped in to support this need. Together they generously supported local food banks across the country, providing meals for millions of people facing hunger. What began as an urgent response to COVID-19-inflated food insecurity transformed into a novel partnership that illuminates the intersection of hunger, health and equity; removes barriers to access food; and advances outcomes for the people we serve.

The New York Times Neediest Cases FundAt a time of crisis when neighbors were facing food insecurity at unprecedented levels, The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund (NCF) helped to provide hope. Since 1911, the NCF has helped raise funds to directly support people most in need. Since 2019, Feeding America has proudly been one of the beneficiaries supported by the NCF campaign. This partnership has provided deep investments and meaningful exposure in the fight against hunger through powerful stories. This pandemic highlighted the barriers to food access, and NCF was there to not only deploy meaningful funding in support of hunger-relief efforts, but also to highlight the tremendous need across the Feeding America network.

**Stepped down from service during fiscal year 2021

** Feeding America includes up to four rotating members on our Executive Team to help us better refine and shape our strategic

priorities, live our values and support the inclusive and equitable culture we seek to create. These members provide connections with

other critical leadership groups within our organization including our Equity Team and our Employee Resource Groups. They serve

limited terms and are elected by the leadership groups within the organization whom they represent.

Donate. Volunteer. Advocate. Educate.

Feeding America® is the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States. Through a network of more than 200 food banks, 21 statewide food bank associations, and over 60,000 partner agencies, food pantries and meal programs, we helped provide 6.6 billion meals to tens of millions of people in need last year. Feeding America also supports programs that prevent food waste and improve food security among the people we serve; brings attention to the social and systemic barriers that contribute to food insecurity in our nation; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry.

Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of the annual report. For questions or more information, please contact Karalee Miller, Manager of Donor Communications, at [email protected] or KayLynn Harris, Specialist of Donor Communications, at [email protected].
